These kitchen spices help you burn fat

While it is important to watch what you eat and follow a fitness program to lose weight and stay fit, there is no harm in adding some healthy spices from your own kitchen to help you get rid of your excess body fat.

Here are some common spices that are known for their fat burning abilities:


Studies show that cinnamon helps to activate the insulin receptors as well as stimulate some  important enzyme systems that are involved in carbohydrate metabolism. It is also known for reducing bad cholesterol. All these properties of cinnamon make it an excellent fat burner.

How To use

-You can add cinnamon to your daily diet by sprinkling powdered cinnamon over salads, omelets, breakfast cereals and coffee.

-You can also have it in the form of tea by mixing one teapoon of powdered cinnamon with one teaspoon of honey and half a cup of water. Have this 20-30 minutes before breakfast on an empty stomach.


Black pepper contains a compound called piperine. Piperine has been known for years to help in digestion. Studies show that it also helps burn fat.

How to use

-You can add freshly grounded black pepper to your regular dishes.

-Make sure you add it towards the end of your cooking because exposure to too much of heat can cause a loss of its flavor and reduce its effectiveness.


Ginger is known for its digestive properties. It is also known to have thermogenic effect. It raises the body temperature by burning fat and this makes it a great natural weight loss agent. Research has shown it also has a satiating property which means you tend to eat less, and this contributes to the weight loss.

How to use

-Take half teaspoon of the powdered ginger and add it to a cup of hot water. Allow it to cool and then drink it on a daily basis.

-Or else you can also mix a tablespoon each of cinnamon and ginger with water, boil for a minute or two and drink when cool.

Cardamom or elaichi is used in Indain household since ages. Like ginger, elaichi is also known to have thermogenic effect, which means that it burns fat to generate heat. Cardamom also helps boost metabolism and in turn helps the body burn more fat. It also helps in preventing bloating and aids in digestion.

How to use

-You can have 2-3 pods of elaichi after meals or add them to your cooking  to help burn body fat.

-You can also have Cardamom tea for added benefits.


Mustard seeds (sarson ke beej) help to boost metabolism and aid in burning body fat. Recent studies have shown that having 1 teaspoon of mustard (about 5 calories) can boost the metabolism by up to 25 %. Not only this, mustard can also trigger weight loss by upto 30% faster. The benefits can be attributed to phytochemicals called allyl isothiocyanates.

How to use

-Have 2-4 teaspoons of mustard seeds daily to help you burn around 50 extra calories in an hour.

-You can sprinkle the seeds on your salads or add them to your daily cooking.
