In Nigeria, a team of scientists found that the gel that was made from the aloe vera plant was given to rats and it helped to relieve constipation. It was also found to be beneficial for persons suffering from other gastrointestinal issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
A study done in Thailand found that consuming 2 tablespoons of aloe vera juice every day caused blood sugar levels to decrease in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This would suggest that there may be place in the future for aloe vera to be considered as part of the treatment regimen in diabetic patients. These results were then later confirmed with a study conducted in Turkey that made use of aloe pulp extract.
Aloe vera contains amino acids, minerals and vitamins which help to rid the body of free radicals. These free radicals are responsible for abnormal cell behaviour and can cause negative health related issues in the long term. It also contains immune boosting polysaccharide proteins which aid in improving your immune system as well.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition which can lead to symptoms including excessive belching, heartburn and possibly central upper abdominal pain. A review done recently showed that taking 1-3 ounces of aloe vera gel with meals can help decrease the symptoms of GERD as it helps to reduce excessive acid produced by the stomach.
Aloe vera contains vitamin C and together with its other natural ingredients, has been shown to be an effective alternative mouthwash compared to other chemical and alcohol based products available on the market. These ingredients all help to prevent plaque build-up on teeth and can also help prevent and heal any bleeding or swollen gums.
In recent studies done it was determined that applying gel made from aloe vera on certain fruit, which included tomatoes and apples, helped to block out certain harmful bacteria from growing on them. It was concluded then that aloe vera gel could help fruit and vegetables stay fresher for longer periods of time without having to make use of potentially hazardous chemicals.
Aloe vera is a very effective face and skin moisturizer due to the fact that this plant stores water in its thick, moist leaves combined with the complex carbohydrates present in the plant as well. This promotes moisture in dry areas such as the lips and heels of the feet. These attributes also have a natural anti-inflammatory effect and therefore help in reducing the burning sensation caused by sunburn.
In new studies that have been published it was found that a compound in aloe vera leaves, called aloe-emodin, could help reduce the progression of breast cancer cells. Currently, research is being done to further investigate how aloe can play a further role in slowing down other types of cancers.
The only side effect associated with aloe vera consumption is possibly experiencing diarrhea due to the high aloin levels in the plant. There’s also no known drug interaction with aloe vera. As always, though, it is suggested to discuss using aloe products with your primary care physician as it is important to make a note of this in your medical records.
